Are aerial silks safe?

Like all aerial arts, performing above the ground comes with risks.  However, JRF is dedicated to upholding the highest levels of safety.   You can read more about safety protocol in my Aerial Silks Safety Guidelines

I don’t have any upper body strength.  Can I do aerial?

YES!  Trust me, you’re not doing any crazy climbs or drops on your first day!    Although aerial is *fantastic* for building upper body strength, you don’t need any to start.  We’ll start with simple moves to get you upside down – and get you hooked – while we slowly build the strength you’ll need to progress.

Is there a weight limit?

NO.  Aerial welcomes people of all shapes and sizes.   (And if you’re concerned about rigging, know that proper rigs are designed to withstand thousands of pounds of force.  You’re in good hands -err, fabrics!)

What should I wear?

I suggest that you wear comfortable, form fitting clothes, as loose or drapey clothing can sometimes get caught up in the fabric.  With that being said, be sure to REMOVE all jewelry beforehand, as rings, watches, etc can snag the fabric, which requires an expensive replacement.   Jewelry can also snag YOU, which would be rather uncomfortable.  Ouch!

Is there anyone who should NOT do aerial silks?

Although I like to be inclusive, there are some people that should NOT do aerial silks for various health and safety reasons.  Below is a list of contraindications for aerial:

  • Vertigo

  • Pregnancy

  • Severe back or neck pain

  • Glaucoma

  • Heart condition

  • Disc herniation

  • Recent surgery or other recent injury

  • Limited shoulder mobility

  • Panic or anxiety attacks

  • Recent Botox (within the past 24-48 hours)

  • Use of medication that can impair judgment

Can I take pictures during my session?

Of course!  I have a tripod that you can use, or I can take photos myself.  We will save the last 5-10 minutes of your session for photos and/or video.

Are aerial silks easy?

No matter whether you are just starting or have practiced for years, aerial silks will continue to challenge you.  But I don’t say that to discourage you!  If you are interested in committing to the art, you will be greatly rewarded.  Your body will be able to do things you never imagined, and you’ll look like a total badass doing it.  However, this will take work and dedication; if you’re hoping for easy gains, you may become frustrated.  Just trust in the process and enjoy the journey!

Is there anything else I should know?

Yes.  Be sure not to eat a large meal before class!

Also…please note that aerial silks is not always comfortable.  Depending on what you’re doing, the silks can pinch, squeeze, or wrap very tightly around you.  Some moves become less painful with practice; other moves just always kinda stink.  As you learn new moves, I will show you ways to mitigate the discomfort.

But trust me, it’s all worth it!
